Description:

Chindongo saulosi is a vibrant and dynamic species of African cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, specifically found around the rocky reefs of Taiwan Reef. This dwarf mbuna species is highly sought after in the aquarium trade due to its striking coloration, manageable size, and active behavior.

Males exhibit a vivid electric blue coloration with dark vertical barring, while females and juveniles display a contrasting bright yellow to orange hue. This natural sexual dimorphism makes C. saulosi especially appealing in display aquariums.

Size:

Typically reaches 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm) in length, making it an excellent choice for medium-sized cichlid tanks.

Behavior and Compatibility:

This species is moderately aggressive and highly territorial, especially among males. It is best kept in species-only tanks or carefully planned Malawi community setups with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. A ratio of one male to multiple females is recommended to reduce aggression.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 7.8–8.6
  • Hardness: Moderately hard to hard (10–20 dGH)

Breeding:

Chindongo saulosi is a maternal mouthbrooder. Females carry fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for approximately 3 weeks before releasing free-swimming young.
