Cyprichromis leptosoma — the aerial acrobat of Lake Tanganyika!
This sleek, torpedo-shaped cichlid is a schooling superstar, famous for its dazzling colors and synchronized swimming. Males often flash electric purples, especially when trying to impress the ladies — think underwater fireworks with fins. Females are a bit more understated but just as elegant, gliding gracefully through the water like ballerinas in silver gowns.
What makes Cyprichromis leptosoma truly unique? They don’t stick to the rocks like most cichlids — these fish prefer to hover mid-water, darting and diving like they’re performing an underwater air show. And when it comes to spawning, males stake out invisible territories in the water column (yes, actual mid-air real estate!) and perform dance-offs to win over females, who then lay eggs and scoop them up in their mouths — talk about multitasking!
Peaceful, social, and full of personality, Cyprichromis leptosoma is the life of the party in any Tanganyikan tank. Just give them space to zoom around and a few tank mates who can appreciate their mid-water magic.
