Description:
The Alenquer Tiger Pleco (scientific name: Panaqolus cf. tankei, often referred to by its L-number L-397) is a striking freshwater catfish species known for its bold, tiger-like striping and peaceful temperament. Native to the Alenquer region of the Amazon River in Brazil, this pleco is highly sought after by aquarium hobbyists for its unique coloration and manageable size.
Key Features:
- Appearance: The Alenquer Tiger Pleco displays an eye-catching pattern of dark brown to black vertical stripes over a golden to orange base, resembling a tiger’s coat. The intensity of the stripes can vary among individuals and may change slightly with mood, age, or water conditions.
- Size: Typically grows to about 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in length, making it a suitable pleco for medium-sized aquariums.
- Behavior: Generally peaceful and shy, this pleco prefers hiding spots such as driftwood, caves, and shaded areas. It is a nocturnal species, most active during the evening and nighttime.
- Diet: A wood-eating (xylophagous) species that requires driftwood in the tank for digestion. It also benefits from a varied diet including algae wafers, vegetables (like zucchini and cucumber), and occasional protein-based foods.
