Description:

Gold Ocellatus (Lamprologus ocellatus “Gold”) is a small, striking freshwater cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for its bold personality and brilliant coloration, this shell-dwelling species is a popular choice among cichlid enthusiasts and aquarists.

Description:

Gold Ocellatus typically grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) in length. Its body is a shimmering golden-yellow color, often accented by iridescent blue or green hues on the fins and face. The species is named for the distinctive ocelli (eyespots) found on its dorsal fin, which resemble small, eye-like markings used for intimidation or mating displays.

Behavior and Habitat:

In the wild, these fish inhabit the sandy, rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika where they claim empty snail shells as their homes. They are territorial and protective, especially during breeding, and display fascinating behaviors like digging, shell-burying, and aggressive posturing.

Aquarium Care:

Gold Ocellatus thrive in hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5–9.0) and require a tank setup that mimics their natural habitat, with sand substrate and plenty of empty snail shells for shelter. A tank size of at least 10 gallons is recommended for a pair. Despite their small size, they are feisty and should be housed with other compatible Tanganyikan species to avoid conflict.
